Inspired by legendary groups like Tower of Power and the big bands of decades past, MOJO is capable of emulating everything from a sultry sax solo to a screaming full big band playing at the top of their lungs.
Pushing the boundaries of sampling and scripting technology far beyond traditional sample libraries, MOJO offers a simple but feature-packed interface. No need to decide in advance which articulation you want to play. Simply load the instrument, turn the Ensemble knob to specify how many players you want playing that instrument (from a soloist to a dectet) and begin controlling the instrument from the keyboard. More than a dozen articulations are instantly loaded and intelligently handled via performance features and keyswitches. Behind the scenes, a humanizing function, smart release layers, and custom legato and vibrato tools assist the player in reproducing the ultimate dimensions in realism. Crescendos and swells sync instantly to host tempos and can be triggered in real time.
Included in the instrument collection are: soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, trumpet (open, muted, and piccolo), flugelhorn, trombone (open and muted), bass trombone, and clarinet. The articulation list varies for each instrument, but generally includes sustains, stabs, staccatos, trills, slurs, shakes, octave runs, rise to hits, falls (including four different lengths), doits, bends, stylistic riffs, special effects, and tempo-synced swells and crescendos. All samples are recorded in 24-bit stereo using the finest preamps in the world, including a vintage Neve 1073 and a LaChapell Audio 992EG, and mics by AKG, Neumann, and Coles.
MOJO is powered by the popular Kontakt engine, offering total integration into all major sequencers via its AudioUnit, VST, and RTAS plug-ins, as well as standalone operation.

Mit den Produkten von Chris Hein Horns, Wallander Instruments, Broadway Bigband oder Sample Modeling verfügt der Arrangeur heute über Instrumente, die Physical-Modeling-Bläser der 90er-Jahre oder angestaubte Sample-Bibliotheken weit hinter sich lassen.
Zwölf Instrumente – Sax, Trompete, Flügelhorn und Klarinette – lassen sich mono- wie polyfon ordentlich über die MIDI-Tastatur anspielen. Ein Blaswandler ist nicht nötig, auch wenn dynamische Anpassungen für Wind-Controller vorliegen. Durchweg klingt die Metall- überzeugender als die Holzblasfraktion, wobei Trompete und Posaune auch mit Dämpfer vertreten sind. Alternativ werden speicherfreundliche Versionen angeboten, die durchschnittlich um 400 MB pro Instrument verbrauchen. Noch schlanker sind die „Sustain Only“-Varianten, die für einfache Bläserteppiche reichen.
Bei den Riffs finden sich über 70 Programme, die kurze temposynchrone Phrasen von Sax, Posaune oder Trompete liefern. Hier wird nochmal bestätigt, dass die Mojo Horn Section im Soul, Pop, Jazz und Funk zuhause ist. Die Einspielungen inspirieren und machen sich schön als musikalische Füllstimmen – große Themen muss man sich aber selbst ausdenken. Amüsanter Bonus: die Special-FX-Abteilung – erfreut hört man instrumentenspezifische Effekte wie Seufzer aus der Klarinette.
Freilich gibt es auch typische Sections aus mehreren Instrumenten. Acht Ensembles im Programm-Ordner stehen den flexibleren zwölf Multis gegenüber, deren Instrumente auf verschiedene MIDI-Kanäle verteilt sind und viele Eingriffe erlauben. Die Bläser sind durchaus präsent und rund, ohne aber als tontechnische Referenz zu bestehen.
Fazit
Die Mojo Horn Section ähnelt einem Mittelklasse-Pkw: Man kommt sehr weit, hat gewissen Komfort und wird finanziell nicht besonders strapaziert. Natürlich bieten Produkte wie Chris Hein Horns Complete für ungefähr 900 Euro oder die Broadway Bigband mit circa 1.700 Euro eine klanglich höhere Authentizität, die aber deutlich mehr kostet. Bei Wallander Instruments muss man zudem verstärkt mit MIDI-Controllern hantieren, um dynamische Parts zu erzeugen.
Bei der Mojo Horn Section läuft vieles einfach: Ob Phrases oder Licks, instrumentale Effekte oder eigens angespielte Sections oder Soloinstrumente – das Produkt von Vir2 kapituliert eigentlich bei keiner Disziplin. Für viele Arrangiertechniken ist es offen. An manchen Stellen könnte es aber noch ein bisschen entspannter laufen. Die Effekte sind zwar gut und zahlreich vorhanden, aber leider nach dem Laden der Programme nicht aktiviert. Und anstelle der Klarinette würde ich lieber jazzige Flöten hören, aber dennoch geht das All-In-One-Konzept auf.
