Future Music 11/2003
Pretty much everything you need to make a trance
tune, boasts the back cover so you already probably know what's on offer here. It's been put together by Gez Dewar and Nick Hale who have worked with or remixed the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Chicane and Carl Cox so should know their stuff. The samples are spread over four CDs in Audio, Wav, Acid and EXS24 formats. They begin with musical riffs and arpeggios and these are pleasingly varied, although I'd suggest that it is these areas where you should be composing your own riffs - let's face it they aren't going to be too complex - but there are plenty of great sounds to sample single notes to develop your own if you are bereft of synths. Also in this section are some great atmospheric hits, stabs and fills for those
essential breakdowns.
On to the beats - the most essential part of any dance-based sample CD in my book - and the team have thoughtfully laid out each set in groups of four for the ultimate lazy man's experience (great!). The claps, so essential, are actually rather good and there's plenty of variation. The kicks are tight and have attitude although I'd like to have seen just a few more. Usefully CD2 breaks the whole lot down in to construction kits based on loops so you can easily produce those gradual rhythmicbuilds. If you think trance is just a simple exercise in 4/4 programming then you are partially right but it's also all about the sounds too. This CD provides a surprisingly sharp and varied array of these - albeit not quite all the parts needed for complete songs - and as trance is still hanging in there, will probably have quite an audience.
