Chillers Joint
You’ll probably want to add your own melodies to lift the tracks above this great-sounding level, and this collection is a good starting point to do just that. Rating: 8/10
Chillers Joint
Music Tech Magazine, 11/2008
www.musictechmag.co.uk
Despite labels like trip hop and chillout being apparently rather unfashionable these days (Especially among the bandwagon-jumping music press), scratch the surface and you hear this stuff absolutely everywhere. From ultra-hip soundtracks like CSI to high-profile adverts, chillout music is still very much present and correct – not to mention that in much of Europe and America it never really went away.
This 1.5GB sample set wrapped in the Elastik Player for Mac and PC comprises 20 construction kits made up of 1,165 loops and one-hit sounds, mixing vintage drum grooves, electric piano riffs, vintage basses, strings, horns, synths, soundscapes and more. Each of the ‘songs’ is provided in four versions: full mix, backing, instruments and drums, so you can isolate and mix or match elements as you please. For each element that are also a number of variations for you to build tracks from.
Musically, we’re on pretty familiar ground, with beautifully recorded, lush, warm and jazzy parts being the order of the day. There’s a heavy 60s soundtrack influence, although with a very modern, slick sheen to it. Dub, funk, soul and even Latin influences are also evident.
There are many loops and ideas here to inspire your downtempo or chillout tracks, although, like other music of this kind, it can get a bit generic at times. You’ll probably want to add your own melodies to lift the tracks above this great-sounding but slightly uninspiring level, and this collection is a good starting point to do just that.
Verdict
Warm, lush and jazzy construction kits for downtempo production.

There‘s a nice consistency of sound across the different construction kits, and loops can easily be mixed and matched for further variety. 4/5 Stars

Ueberschall Chillers Joint
Elastik Loop Library - 4 Stars
As the title suggests, the musical target of Chillers Joint is downtempo soul, funk, hip-hop, trip-hop and related styles. This collection of 20 construction kits, comprises over 1100 loops, which account for 1.5 GB of data, and uses Ueberschall‘s Elastik front-end (...).
In each construction kit, the loops are split into four groups: drums, instruments, backings and mixes. The drums section contains multiple loops, both of complete drum mixes and individual layers, the latter offering both drums and percussion sounds. Sonically, the drums seem spot-on for the target music styles, with the kicks having plenty of thump, and a nice combination of very dry and very wet snares. The instrument sections generally include two or three bass loops, plus a selection of other synth-based sounds. The basses also pack a punch in the lower frequencies, while the synth material spans a broad spectrum, covering simple textures, rhythmic beds, filtered sounds and sound FX. The other two groups give you mixes based on the drum and instrument loops: ”backings” are simply mixes without any drums, whereas the ”mixes” provide various combinations of the loops pre-mixed and including the drums - and both are useful for auditioning each construction kit, giving you a feel for what‘s possible. (...)
As you‘d expect from the title, the original recording tempos are in or around the 90bpm territory. The style of the musical content is also suitably chilled, although there‘s a range of moods. For example, the ”Chinchilla” construction kit would not sound out of place as a mellow Zero-7 track, and ”Train Of Thought” is equally cool, with its fretless bass, while ”Desert Storm” offers something rather darker. In contrast, kits such as ”Off The Hook” and ”Flashback” reminded me of Madonna, circa her Erotica album. Moods aside, there‘s a nice consistency of sound across the different construction kits, and loops can easily be mixed and matched for further variety.
